Women to Watch 2009

Alice B. Miller, Esquire
Alice B. miller, Esquire is a
vigorous advocate of Orlando’s children and families. Miller
is a first generation American born to Cuban parents that
immigrated to the United States in search of freedom and
opportunity. Born in New Jersey and raised in South Florida,
she is fluent in English and Spanish. Her maternal
grandparents raised her from age ten. “My grandparent
selflessly stepped in to raise and care for me and two
brothers. I value and respect there sacrifice and
commitment. They loved and nurtured us. Miller
consequently "pays it forward” for the benefit of children
whenever possible.
“Children are so
vulnerable…like clay at the mercy of their molders.” Miller
first majored in Elementary Education, but later put her
skills and passion to the use in law. She graduated from the
University Of Florida Levin College Of Law in 2000 where she
was part of Gator Team Child, a child advocacy clinic.
Having taught at a low-income middle school, she appreciates
the hard work and numerous challenges teachers face daily
including having to live on “salaries based on out-dated
philosophies.” She worked as Associate General Counsel for
the Department of Children and Families. Miller then went into
private practice and was mentored in Family Law by David W. Veliz. “Family Law was a perfect fit because children are a
central component of a majority of divorce cases.
My career as a Family Law
Attorney allows me to counsel parents going through a very
emotionally turbulent time. I keep the client focused on
putting their children first”, Miller says. Miller now has
her own law firm. She practices Estate Planning/Probate and
Dependency Law. She especially enjoys her Dependency work
saying, “I guide parents through the system so that they can
get the professional services they need to bring their
children home as soon as possible.” Miller encourages
parents to put the best interest of their children before
their own. She cherishes her career and notes that the
dedication, sincerity and integrity she gives each client
cannot be measured or bought with billable hours. Miller is
married to Jonathan, who is an elected official, a community
activist, a supportive husband and a dedicated father. They
have a 4 year old son and 1 year old daughter. Miller can be
seen on Orange TV. discussing various topics. She is a proud
member of Hispanic Bar and the American Inn of court. Miller
watches over Central Florida’s children and families and
that is why she is a woman to watch.
